Awareness creation amongst vulnerable herds on Restocking / redistribution of productive animals, collection/selection of productive female goats; January 2016- March 2016

FAO Somalia had funded a livestock redistribution intervention restocking project that is intended to supply 6,525 heads of reproductive female goats to 435 households in with comprehensive livelihood and non-livelihood packages in conflicts and droughts affected villages under Iskushuban district of Bari region in Puntland.

The restocking activity was jointly implemented by PULPA, SWA and MOLAH of Puntland. The role of PULPA was to select quarantine sites, vaccinate, treat and hand over the productive female goats to KAALO for redistribution to selected vulnerable pastoralists households. The objectives of the project is to improve the livelihoods of small and medium pastoralist household ,through increased availability of animals traction and improving livestock production. The main objective of the intervention is to rebuilding the livelihood of house hold severally affected by conflicts and droughts thus restocking livelihood and preventing sliding back in to destitution.

Moreover, this intervention aims at rebuilding household livelihood assets in the form of targeting restocking and to increase household food production capacity and purchasing power. The intervention will also inject cash income in to the local economy and revive the collapsed livestock economy.

Under this project, PULPA carried out the following activities:

  • Mobilization of the communities at Project sites
  • Collection of animals (Goats) from FAO animal supplies at Iskushuban district of Bari region
  • deworming and vaccination of all animals intended for restocking purposes
  • Consignment of the animals to the FAO animal distributor in the holding facilities
